Spring Quenda Count
You’re invited to join the WA Gould League Spring Quenda Count!

Volunteer citizen scientists have now collected more than 10 years’ worth of data as part of the Spring Quenda Count! This year, WWF-Australia have handed the reigns to the WA Gould League, who are very excited to host this project and ensure its continued success.
Data from the Spring Quenda Count is used by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to monitor populations of the iconic quenda (Isoodon fusciventer), a species of bandicoot endemic to south-west Western Australia. Although not currently threatened, the quenda is susceptible to threats associated with development, including vehicle strike, introduced predators (including pet cats and dogs), habitat loss and fragmentation. It is therefore listed by the DBCA as a priority four species that requires ongoing monitoring.

Data collected so far suggests that the reporting rate of quendas has stayed relatively stable over time, which is wonderful news for the conservation status of this species. Despite the threats it faces, the quenda is doing well, with strongholds in the Perth Hills, particularly around Kalamunda, Roleystone and Glen Forest. However, as the urban sprawl of Perth continues, it is important that we keep monitoring quenda populations in case they start to decline. In recent years, the number of participants in the Spring Quenda Count has decreased, and we are keen to welcome new quenda counters to ensure the ongoing success of this citizen science project.

Read the below data sheet and FAQs for detailed information on how to collect and submit your data.
Please note, you are responsible for your own safety while taking part in quenda surveys. Be situationally aware, dress appropriately for the weather, take someone with you or notify someone of your destination and expected time of return.
The Spring Quenda Count can occur at any time during the month of October:
-
If you are a new observer, choose a site to survey where you have seen quendas before
-
Choose your survey days in advance; choose any week in October when you can conduct at least one survey
-
Fill in a data sheet (see below). You will be asked to record the following:
-
Some information about your site, and the date of your survey/s
-
The number of quendas you saw during each survey
-
The number of minutes you spent looking out for quendas each survey
-
-
We would also be interested to know some more information about the general frequency of quenda sightings and health of quendas in your area, and anything you think might encourage or discourage quendas from visiting your site.
Please remember that if you don’t see any quendas at your site during your surveys, this is still very important information, and we want to hear about it. It may indicate that quenda populations are declining in your area, so please record and submit details of surveys where no quendas were observed.
Return your data sheets by email by 8th November 2025.

Taking part in the Spring Quenda Count is fun and easy; choose a site, plan your survey days/times in advance, and simply count how many quendas you saw and how long you spent looking.
You can keep an eye out for quendas while on a regular bush-walk, while doing some gardening, or while simply enjoying a cuppa on your verandah!
