ORIENTEERING FOR SCHOOLS

Yrs 7-12

$13 / student

Experience orienteering in a local natural environment.

EXCURSION INFO

Get your students involved in a hands-on, outdoor learning experience where students experience orienteering surrounded by the aquatic, bird, animal and plant life, which live in and around Herdsman’s Lake. We start with a quick lesson on respect and safety in the Herdsman Lake environment, before learning all about orienteering and map reading. Participants will study the legend on a map to learn about common symbols and what they represent. They will investigate scale and learn to estimate approximate distances. Contours will be used to assist map reading and they will learn tips to orientate maps for successful navigation. Orienteering tips and course maps have been developed for the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre by Orienteering WA. Please follow directions from the Orienteering WA website when downloading course maps for students prior to your visit.

We finish with some time in the Wildlife Centre where students can explore our displays.
