About the Event
Dr Nicholas Bannan will take us on an intriguing journey in this special evening of music, nature and evolution. The title can be taken two ways: (a) we are the species we are because we adapted animal vocalisations into the unique medium of speech - but this started with song, which remains a vital aspect of human culture; (b) we owe to Darwin the initial recognition of this continuity with the animal kingdom, and its significance for music, which critics of his own time tried systematically to bury through ridiculing both him and his theory.
Nicholas is an Honorary Research Fellow from the Department of Music at University of WA, with a particular interest in the evolution of music and language and the theories of Charles Darwin.
All are welcome to attend this fascinating blend of music and nature. Audience participation encouraged!
Supper will be provided, including coffee available for purchase from 'Twitchers'.
We hope you can join us!
The event is free but please book for catering purposes.
For those unable to attend in person, please register here to join the Teams online event.
