About the Event

This event has been proudly sponsored by Inspiring Australia & National Science Week, an Australia-wide initiative running from 10th to 18th August.

The WA Gould League is thrilled to be hosting two unique events as part of Science Week 2024, that aim to give young people and those in underrepresented groups equitable access to STEM opportunities.

‘A Masterclass in Herpetology - Surviving & Thriving is a workshop designed to share a range of expert perspectives with young people with special needs, who have an interest in animals, nature and the environment.

This 3-hour course delves into the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians, with presentations by expert speakers, hands-on and engaging activities with local Animal Rescue organisations, and practical components with live animals.

Along with Discovery Centre zoologists and ecologists, the day will include several guest presenters, including the teams from Animal Ark, Roaming Reptiles and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

Covering topics such as classification, ecology, threats, field survey & monitoring, wildlife first aid, safe handling practices, and diet & food preparation, this masterclass will empower participants to care for reptiles, amphibians, and their environment in a professional and ethical manner. This newly-gained knowledge will hopefully provide an insight into a career or volunteering role in animal rescue, animal husbandry, or similar fields.

This event will be tailored to meet the needs of participants, with flexible breaks and shorter presentations when required. When registering for this event, please advise what the participant will require or what considerations need to be made to optimise their experience.

COST: $10 per participant; parents and carers free of charge.

SUITABLE FOR: Young people with special needs aged 10-17 years.

WHEN: Saturday 17th August, 9.00am - 12.00pm. Please arrive at 8.45am for a 9.00am start.

WHERE: Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, corner of Flynn and Selby Street, Wembley.
