The Conservation Council of WA (Sarah English) and the WA Gould League (Kevin Kenneally and Mandy Bamford) met with the Education Minister, Hon. Sue Ellery, on 16 April 2018 at Dumas House, West Perth, to discuss the budget funding cuts to education that could result in the closure of Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre. Outcomes from meeting:
Hundreds of people have been emailing the Education Minister, askin
g her to restore funding in, full, to Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre
Thanks to a huge show of community support, the Education Minister requested a meeting with the WA Gould League.
The Education Minister says she values Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre for its important work in the areas of education, conservation, tourism, and Aboriginal culture.
The Minister committed (at the meeting) to facilitate the WA Gould League’s continued close working relationship with the Department of Education (regardless of the funding outcome) and undertook to instruct the Director General of Education to formalise this arrangement.
The Education Minister says she values and supports the Centre - so let's keep the pressure on until the State Labor Government restores funding in full!
Successive WA Government’s through the Department of Education have funded the WA Gould League for nearly 80 years.
BUT the Minister hasn't committed to restoring State Government funding for the WA Gould League beyond 2018. Without funding, the Centre may have to close.
Ask the Minister of Education to demonstrate her support for the Centre by restoring funding in full! Keep the pressure on - send her and the Premier an email!
WE WILL CELEBRATE our 80th birthday next year. However, if we lose State Government funding at the end of this year, we'll lose it forever
Don't let WA lose this iconic and important part of our State’s history!
