Wildlife Explorer (4-6)

Wildlife Explorer (4-6)

Learn about animals of the lake (birds, insects, fish and reptiles).

What are the adaptations, features and living needs of the organisms living in the lake? How do they grow? What changes occur? What about their families? Where do birds live?

Get the children involved in a hands-on, outdoor learning experience where students discover the aquatic, bird, animal and plant life, which live in and around Herdsman’s Lake.

We start with a quick lesson on animals and their lifecycles, to create a common understanding.

Next students are outside using scoop-nets to collect the tiny aquatic animals. They’ll be asked to identify, sort and classify their catches, before we put the critters back in the lake.

Then we’re off for a walk to explore and observe the surrounds of the lake, spotting birds, frogs and trees to learn about how an ecosystem operates and especially to learn how the tiny critters they just scooped, are all part of one big food chain.

We finish with some hands on animal time as the students are taught about some of the animals of the lake; we have in the displays of the Wildlife Centre.

Conducted an independent or group investigation of aquatic life at Herdsman Lake

Identified some freshwater macro-invertebrates and discussed their lifecycles, their importance in the wetland food web and described the adaptations that help them survive in their habitat.

Explored a Food Chain and learnt about how things depend upon each other to survive.

Learnt some ecological terms and concepts.

Thought about how their own actions might impact upon this and other wetlands.

Had some fun exploring, learning as they experience nature first hand.
