WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR HARMONY WEEK AND NAIDOC (National Aboriginal
and Islanders Day of Celebrations) WEEK?
Learning Experience suitable for: early to middle childhood (typically
years K-7)
Description:
Treat your students to an excursion to Herdsman Lake, where they can 'go
walkabout' with their Nyungar guides and experience the life of traditional
Nyungar living. Students will participate in a series of 'hands-on' indigenous
learning experiences (approx 30 min each) which have been arranged in a
rotational program.

Integrated Learning Experiences include:
Nyungar
Rock Art
Tell your story ("Nih") through art using the natural material
around you. Share your story and keep memento of your experience.
Nyungar Dance and Story-telling
With no written language the Nyungars were expert communicators and educators
: Learn to become one with nature around you. The ultimate in student motivation
- learn or go hungry!
Nyungar Hunting
- spear throwing
Learn how to hunt the Nyungar way - have a go at spearing your own kangaroo!
Bush-Tucker
and Bush Medicine
Learn the secrets of survival in the swamp -try bush-tucker and bush medicine
as you wander through the swamp on our swamp boardwalk.
Nyungar
Know How
Examine Nyungar artefacts, discuss and explore their uses from ceremonial
uses, and methods of communication to everyday hunting and gathering uses.
Smoking Ceremony
Encompass the culture and spirituality of the Nyungar people. Let the smells
and sights foster the harmony of the Nyungar culture.
Nyungar camp
food
Forget Big Mac's - this is Mac Skippy! Have a taste of BBQ Kangaroo and
Traditional Damper. Each student will receive a small piece of Kangaroo
on a piece of traditional damper. (additional $3/student for this
experience).
Nyungar Survivor
So you are a Survivor Fan? Well now is your chance to train up! Learn the
Nyungar art of building a shelter (Mia Mia) using the natural materials
around you.

regarding our risk minimisation and excursion policy. Herdsman Lake
Wildlife Centre does not come under the Departments Water Based
Excursion Policy. Teachers will receive a Nyungar Day Resource
Kit, 1 week prior to the event, including Teacher classroom resources,
their own individual school group program for the day, a map of the
area and instructions for bus drivers.
All Integrated Learning Experiences will have a Nyungar Guide/Leader.Teachers
are responsible for student supervision.
WA Gould League acknowledges the traditional Nyungar landowners
of Herdsman Lake and the partnership of Yelakitj
Moort in providing these unique Nyungar experiences.
