Wetland Ecology Experience

WetlandEcologyExp smallThis program is ideal for students to experience and observe for themselves the ecological relationships found in a wetland ecosystem and to understand the impact of human action on the natural environment.

This program integrates many of the Australian Curriculum requirements for Science and Geography. Beyond the real-world science content and scientific skills development, students will also gain an appreciation of the intrinsic and utilitarian value of nature, and learn about the history and cultural significance of Herdsman Lake to the traditional custodians of the land – the Nyungar people.

This program is commonly coupled with the Freshwater Ecology learning experience to create an outstanding half- day excursion that assists students in grappling with the complexities and fragile nature of the wetland ecosystem.

At the end of the Wetland Ecology Walk, students will have:

• Observed ecological relationships in a wetland ecosystem
• Gained an appreciation of the intrinsic and utilitarian value of nature, including the historical and cultural significance of Herdsman Lake to the Nyungar people.
• Identified the effect of humans on the wetland water quality and subsequent impact on living organisms
• Discussed how their own actions can improve wetland water quality
• Described and discussed wetland management practices
