About
the Gould League
The Gould League is Australia's leading environmental education
organisation. We have been educating children, schools and the general
community about conservation and the environment for over 90 years. The
Gould League has pioneered the development of outcomes-based environmental
education through activity programs, resources and website development.
The creative team at the Gould League continues to have an impact on the
actions of the community, in the areas of waste minimisation, wildlife
and environment conservation, and developing sustainable lifestyles.
Over one million Australians have joined the Gould League over the past
93 years.
History of the Gould League
The first Gould League president was Alfred Deakin, and since his appointment,
the Gould Leagues have made a sustained and profound contribution to our
understanding and appreciation of the Australian environment. Originally
set up to prevent bird egg collecting and to protect Australian birds,
the Gould Leagues have changed the behaviour of generations of Australians
towards their environment through a series of extremely successful educational
campaigns.
About
the WA Gould League
The WA Gould League (Inc) is a non-profit,
independent environmental organisation that enables people to understand,
appreciate and protect the environment. The Western Australian Gould League
was formed in 1939 with Charles Hadley, the then Director of Education
as its first President. Membership quickly rose with over 18000 school
students becoming members by 1955. The WA Gould League has continued to
maintain a strong relationship with Catholic, Independent and Department
of Education schools, with over 7500 students annually experiencing the
environmental education programs provided by the WA Gould League.
The
WA Gould League continues to review the environmental education experiences
to keep pace with current educational initiatives. The philosophy behind
the activities at Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre is to provide outcomes-focused
education packages that allow for different learning styles of students
to cater for multiple intelligences.
2006
and Beyond: National and Global Sustainability
Most recently
the WA Gould League is collaborating with its expertise in outcomes-based
sustainability education with other stakeholders in the Australian Sustainable
Schools Initiative (AuSSI). AuSSI main aim is to:
- embed
sustainability within the culture of WA school communities
- use
sustainability as a key context for teaching and action-based lea learning
(not an add on)
- provide
a whole-school planning process / framework linked to an extensive range
of existing sustainability learning programs and resources.

About
Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre
The WA Gould League Manages the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre
within the Herdsman Lake Regional Park. Situated on the edge of Herdsman
Lake, the Wildlife Centre provides a unique opportunity for interface with
the local community for research extension and education. Community
activities include bird walks, information nights, night stalks, wildlife
excursions and festivals. These activities aim to provide direct interaction
with the natural ecosystem and develop community interest and involvement
in the natural environment and wildlife conservation. The Centre Manager

About
Herdsman Lake Regional Park
The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) manages
Herdsman Lake Regional Park. In 1997, the state government proposed that
a management plan for Herdsman Lake be prepared by DEC (Department of Environment and Conservation)
in conjunction with the City of Stirling. The WA Gould League is proactive
in developing partnerships with Murdoch University, WWF and other organisations
in order to facilitate the fulfilment of the Herdsman Lake Regional Park
Management Plan (2001-2011).
Herdsman
Lake is a haven for birdwatchers, and is only six kilometres from the
city. This beautiful wetland provides a wildlife sanctuary where many species
of waterbird breed. Herdsman has playground facilities, a wildlife viewing
centre, the lake, grassed parklands, and kilometres of walking and cycling
tracks. Herdsman
Lake is an almost oval shaped lake, measuring 2.5km from north to south,
and 2km from east to west, with an area of just under 370ha. Here are some
further facts about the lake:
- Almost
80% of the lake is covered with bullrushes.
- In
summer, most of the lake is dry.
- 15%
of the lake is permanent deep water.
- In
the 1830s, the lake was a possible water supply for Perth.
- In
1936, the lake was almost used as an alternative airport.
- Herdsman
Lake was declared a regional park in 1999.
